In this workshop students will
utilize Theatre Games, the Harold Technique, and
Johnstone’s status work, in order to create short,
realized scenes. Improvisation is much more than
just going for the joke, and this introductory

THE TECHNIQUE OF
ACTING
Learning the basic principles of
acting through the Meisner Technique. Students
will participate in beginning exercises that
cultivate their individuality as artists. This
technique, by Sanford Meisner, long the head of
acting at the famed Neighborhood Playhouse, is
rooted in the principals of truth, instinct and
behavior. For the serious young artist, this
course will begin to open doors and break down
barriers, freeing the artist to express him or
herself in a new light. At the end of the 8-week
session, the actors will be free to perform a
piece of their own choice! Come and begin your
journey into “living truthfully under imaginary
circumstances.”

CONTEMPORARY ACTING TECHNIQUES:
Viewpoints, Practical Aesthetics, and Stanislavsky.
There are thousands of different approaches to acting:
which one is the
right one for you? This class will introduce you to
three of the major
approaches that are used in cutting-edge theatre today.
Stanislavky is so much more than “emotional memory” and
“living the
role.” He continued to explore and refine his acting
approach for years
after he visited New York and inspired Lee Strasberg to
create the
Method. Stanislavsky’s true legacy is of physical
action, the pursuit
of organic truth on stage, and the spirit of inquiry.
We’ll focus on
Stanislavky’s later-life research and explore the way
his approach is
taught in Russia today.
Practical Aesthetics is the system of analysis and the
approach to
acting created by David Mamet and William H. Macy at the
Atlantic
Theatre Company. We’ll break down the text to identify
actions and
we’ll practice ways of freeing yourself to be in the
moment.
The nine Viewpoints are simply a vocabulary for talking
about physical
life on stage, created by Ann Bogart and Tina Landau
(inspired by the
work of the choreographer Mary Overlie.) We’ll learn
this vocabulary,
train with exercises designed to help you be present in
your body, and
explore the ways this new awareness can be used in plays
of any style
or era.
In the end, each actor has to find her or his own best
way of working.
We’ll culminate with additional scene work, to give each
actor the
opportunity to integrate some new ideas into your
approach to a role.
*This class is for Intermediate or Advanced actors only.
Please submit
a resume for admittance into the class.

DIRECTING AS STORYTELLING
At its most basic and most sophisticated levels, the job
of the
director is that of storyteller. What is the story of
the play? How
does staging and design help me tell that story? How do
I communicate
that story to my actors, designers, and other
collaborators? We’ll
practice techniques for distilling a play into one
exciting, visceral
sentence that makes you want to start rehearsing right
away, and helps
you to keep your eye on your goal each step of the way.
We’ll train
with exercises that will help you know why your staging
is working for
you – or isn’t. We’ll explore all the different theatre
languages
spoken by your collaborators, and how you can best
approach each one.
We'll culminate with a final scene presentation. Whether
you’re an
experienced director or just starting out, this class
can give you a
solid foundation for a lifetime of storytelling.
